AIDS has become a chronic disease, thanks to new treatments for bacterial infections, fungal infections and cancer.
In spite of recent advances in antiretroviral therapy (such as HAART), the effectiveness of currently available antiviral drugs is limited by the development of viral resistance, the complexity and toxicity of drug regimens, and the high cost of therapy.
Because of these facts, a rational approach to AIDS treatment is necessary.  The philosophy of this approach is as follows:
  • Minimize antiviral therapy.
  • Treat infections early and aggressively.
  • Avoid prolonged drug treatment.
  • Avoid immunosuppressive therapies, such as herbs, antioxidants, hormones.
  • Look for treatments that boost cell-mediated immunity.
